Within the fields of architectural and construction informatics, the focus of his past work has been on Building Information Modelling (BIM), Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) and Linked Data.
Jakob Beetz graduated as a Dipl.-Ing. from Bauhaus-University Weimar in 2003 at the chair of Informatik in der Architektur InfAR, under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Donath. He was awarded a PhD degree for his work on „Facilitating distributed collaboration in the AEC/FM sector using Semantic Web Technologies“ supverised by prof. dr. ir. Bauke de Vries and dr.ir. Jos van Leeuwen at the ISBE group of the Department for the Built Environment at the TU Eindhoven.
He is author of more than 80 scientific peer-reviewed publications and co-editor and -author of the books Building Information Modeling – Technology Foundations and Industry Practice (English version, 2018) resp. Building Information Modeling – Technologische Grundlagen und industrielle Praxis (German, 2015).
He co-founded the Open Source collaboration platform bimserver.org and lay the foundations to the OWL representation of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) referred to as ifcOWL.
He has participated in numerous research projects including EU FP7 DURAARK, EU H2020 BIM4Ren and is active in committees for the standarization of interoperability in information exchange for the building industry on national (DIN), EU (CEN) and international (ISO, buildingSMART, W3C) levels.
